Seasons in motion
Rain, not the calendar, sets the rhythm of a safari. Here is how seasons change visibility, access, crowding and cost across the reserves we cover.
Why seasons matter more than dates
Across most of eastern and southern Africa, the year divides into a dry season and one or two rainy seasons. As land dries, surface water shrinks and animals gather near rivers, pans and boreholes. Vegetation thins, so animals are easier to see. That is why the dry season is usually called peak season — and why it is also the most crowded and expensive.
The green or rainy season reverses the pattern. Grazers spread out across fresh grazing, many species give birth, migrant birds arrive from Europe and Asia, and the landscape turns vivid. Some tracks become impassable and certain camps close, but those that stay open often charge less and host fewer guests. For photographers, dramatic skies and clean air can outweigh the inconvenience of afternoon storms.
Neither season guarantees anything. Animals respond to local rainfall, which varies from year to year. Use the matrix below as a guide to probability, not a promise.

The Great Migration, read calmly
The wildebeest migration is a continuous movement, not an event. Herds typically calve on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti around Ndutu from about January to March, move north and west through the long rains, and reach the northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara in the dry months, often between July and October. River crossings on the Mara River depend on the herds' unpredictable decisions; some days pass without one. Crossings also attract dense vehicle gatherings, so conservancy rules on spacing matter.
Plan for a season, not a scene. The animals will keep their own schedule; your job is to be in the right habitat when it is working.
Plimarosafari field note

Southern Africa's cold, clear winter
In Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa, June to August brings dry days with cold mornings and nights; temperatures can drop sharply in open vehicles. September and October are hotter and driest, concentrating wildlife but making midday heat demanding. November rains end the season in many areas. The Okavango is unusual: floodwater peaks in the dry winter, so water-based activities are at their best when the surrounding land is driest.
Green season for birds and births
From November to April, Palearctic migrants such as European bee-eaters and steppe eagles join resident species, and many antelope give birth. South Luangwa renames this its emerald season; some camps stay open with boat activities when rivers rise. Expect heat, humidity and heavier malaria risk, and check which roads are open.
India's short safari window
Indian tiger reserves generally close core zones during the monsoon, roughly July to September, though dates vary by park and year. Ranthambore's hot months from April to June concentrate tigers near water but bring extreme heat. Kaziranga usually opens in November and is often flooded in the monsoon, when animals move to higher ground in the adjacent Karbi Anglong hills.
Choosing your month
Concentration
Pick late dry season and accept more vehicles and higher rates.
Value and quiet
Pick shoulder months such as May, June or November where camps remain open.
Birds and newborns
Pick early green season and plan for rain and flexible routes.
